"NEW YORK --Matt Murphy could become $500,000 richer if he sells Barry Bonds' record-breaking home run ball.

Selling the ball for that amount would instantly put Murphy in the highest tax bracket for individual income, where he would face a tax rate of about 35 percent, or about $210,000 on a $600,000 ball.

Even if he does not sell the ball, Murphy would still owe the taxes based on a reasonable estimate of its value, according to John Barrie, a tax lawyer with Bryan Cave LLP in New York. Capital gains taxes also could be levied in the future as the ball gains value, he said."

Never thought about this aspect of it. I love our tax code.

That does suck! Especially if Matt was only out there because of his love for Barry Bonds and if he had no intention of selling the ball. Did I read that he was a Mets or Yankees fan?

Personally I thought Matt Murphy was great in the Blues Brothers, that diner scene with Aretha Franklin was a classic! Excellent guitarist.

A buddy of mine dragged me down (we were at college in VT) to Amhurst to see Matt Guitar Murphy at a small bar. I could not believe my eyes, the guy is built like a linbacker and man can he play. Pure rock and roll blues just awesome.

The movie was funny but that was a serious band.

Steve Cropper
Duck Dunn
Matt Murphy
Paul Shaffer (not in the movie but was on the albums and was the musical director for the band)

I think its on the Briefcase full of Blues album they play Shotgun Blues and Matt Murphy plays one of the sweetest solos I have ever heard. I started to go back and listen to the Stax recordings because of that band.

Mr. Murphy has also promised to give 1/2 the money to
his friend who was with him at the game. And to answer
elbow's question, he is a Mets fan!

I saw an interview with Todd McFarlane and he said that he isn't so interseted in buying this ball, but will pay big $'s for the LAST HR Bonds hits, since that one will be the new record to beat.
Regardless, if I'm going to be taxed anyway, I'm selling that thing tommorrow.

I'd sell it to my friend, and real quick.
One sports anchor here say's the price will go down with
every home run barry hits before he sells it.
Hope all is fine in your neck of the woods!

As long as we can keep at least a few games ahead of the Evil Empire, things will be fine!

One of the bad things about winning prizes on game shows like "Wheel of Fortune" is that you actually have to fill out tax forms before you can leave with the goods. I imagine if you win a year's supply of napkins, you are exempt. But that overvalued vacation to the islands might end up costing you almost as much as if you paid for it yourself.
